What is a Workers’ Compensation Nurse Case Manager?

A workers’ compensation nurse case manager is concerned with occupational health, and helps manage the care an employee receives after a workplace injury. Case managers are not always necessary after every injury, but they help manage longer recoveries to ensure a safe return to work for the employee and savings for the company.

When a claim is necessary a case manager coordinates with workers’ compensation insurance. They assess the medical case as treatment progresses to ensure a safe and efficient return to work for the employee. This also saves on unnecessary medical treatment and doctor visits. A case manager serves the injured worker and the company to ensure recovery and to control costs.

What Does a Workers’ Comp Nurse Case Manager Do?

Workers’ compensation nurse case managers help injured workers return to work safely and efficiently and manage the compensation process. The role of the nurse includes:

  • Scheduling medical appointments
  • Coordinating with the treating physician
  • Keeping track of the injured employee’s recovery
  • Reporting back to the insurance company
  • Determining any work restrictions for the employee to return to work safely

A workers’ compensation nurse case manager is beneficial to help coordinate treatment and control costs over the course of an employee’s recovery.

Coordinate Medical Treatment

A workers’ comp nurse case manager helps coordinate a doctor’s care plan for the injured employee. They can schedule doctor visits and monitor employee care to prevent unnecessary physician visits.

Perform “Triage” Following Injury

Injury triage is performed to ensure employees receive the appropriate level of care. Following Medcor Care Protocols, our nurses determine the right care for the injured employee.

Perform Onsite Care Evaluations

With onsite care evaluations at Medcor clinics, the workers’ compensation nurse case manager assesses the employee’s injury and tracks their healing through to their return to work.

Create a Return to Work Plan

A return to work plan by your workers’ compensation nurse case manager includes managing the care the injured employee is receiving and ensuring they are healthy when they return to work and able to perform their job safely.

Should You Get a Nurse Case Manager for Workers’ Compensation?
